Jüri MakarovEE

Estonian music industry pioneer

Jüri Makarov is an Estonian music industry pioneer and cultural catalyst who transformed Eastern Europe's musical landscape during and after the Soviet era. Makarov's crowning achievement was founding and promoting the legendary Rock Summer Festival (1988-1997), which brought international artists like Public Image Ltd, Big Country, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Iggy Pop, Blur and hundreds more to Estonia right before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain. This groundbreaking event not only revolutionised Estonia's cultural scene and music industry but helped shape the country's identity during its path to independence.

Beyond Rock Summer, Makarov established the Piraat nightclub, TOP Radio, Tipp TV and music magazine Kuum. He has been involved in organising over 3,000 shows across 15 countries, featuring stars from Joe Cocker and Jose Carreras to David Copperfield. A true renaissance man, Makarov's journey has taken him from DJ and television host to record producer, concert promoter, media entrepreneur, sheep farmer and even chef. In 2003, the International Live Music Conference (ILMC) recognised him with the Best Promoter award.

Recently honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Estonian Music Industry Business Awards, his influence on the Estonian music industry remains unparalleled.
