Jonathan BunceCA

Artistic / Executive Director of Wavelength Music

Jonathan Bunce (better known as Jonny Dovercourt) has been an active participant in Toronto's independent music community since his teenage years as a musician, writer, editor, presenter and advocate. In 2000, he co-founded Wavelength Music, combining his experience in music and journalism. The organisation evolved from a grassroots collective to a professional non-profit arts organisation, where he has served as Artistic/Executive Director since 2014.

Jonny is the author of "Any Night of the Week: A DIY History of Toronto 1957-2001" (Coach House Books, 2020), which has spawned a podcast series and walking tours. He has co-edited two volumes of Coach House's uTOpia anthology, contributes to MusicWorks Magazine and has held senior roles at the Music Gallery and Images Festival. His contributions earned him a Toronto Arts Council/Banff Centre Cultural Leaders Lab Fellowship (2017/18) and a Vital People Award (2013).

As a musician, Jonny has played in more than a dozen bands, including Several Futures and Republic of Safety. In 2023, he co-authored the influential "Reimagining Music Venues" study with Daniel Silver from the University of Toronto, which was featured in major media and incorporated into the City of Toronto's new Action Plan for Culture. When not immersed in music, Jonny cycles and writes science fiction.
