Alar grew up in the small town of Torshälla, Sweden — still somewhat bigger than the family's place of origin, the village of Karala on the western shore of the Estonian island of Saaremaa. Growing up within an Estonian refugee community partly led him to a career in migration, ethnic relations and diversity in all its various forms. Recent decades have centred on diversity in the arts. Alar is also a board member of Riksförbundet för Folkmusik och Dans (National Association of Folk Music and Dance). Producing and hosting a series of talk shows with guests from the world of the arts has increasingly become a calling — and he is delighted to be bringing that experience to Estonia and Tallinn Music Week for the first time.
