The Show Must Go On (But Can You?): Navigating Risk and Burnout
Christina Maslach studied burnout in 1996 and found six components essential for people with a high drive: independence to make decisions; a team around them and someone who can replace them; daily recognition that they are on the right track; a reasonable workload and sufficient rest; a legitimate expectation that life will get better; and the opportunity to talk about things honestly and openly.
In the field of music and arts, however, you cannot take sick leave and step away when a festival, tour, performance or deadline is just around the corner. All the conditions for burnout are present — and compounded by time pressure, criticism, public pressure, financial risk, and constant uncertainty.
